Browser/server settings and parse error notifications

I am returning to PHP from an absence and have a minor problem/ query if anyone could help-

I used to find it beneficial when IE would display a message along the lines of
"Parse error on line x"
to indicate any minor coding errors

My current settings result in a blank page rather than any error message.

Is there a setting that I can adjust in either IE or Apache that would enable the display of such messages
