ONCE upon a time, shortly after God created Man, Man was wandering about the Garden naming all the beasts etc.
But Man began to feel lonely - all the animals had other anmials. He had no-one. So he asked God for a companion.
So God created Dog to be a loyal companion to Man. And Dog was indeed faithful, loyal, and obedient in a way that another human could not be.
And Man became prideful, saying "Look how Dog adores me no matter what I do. Clearly I must be a superior being to inspire such devotion."
God heard this (it would come as no surprise to learn). So God decided to teach Man a lesson. He created Cat.
Cat would not obey Man (unless he wanted to). Cat would not come when he called (unless he wanted to). Cat would decide when he would be fed, and if Man forgot Cat was sure to remind him. And Cat would often choose to ignore Man's entreaties for companionship and instead stare at a rock as if it were by far the most interesting thing in sight. And thus was Man humbled.
So everyone was happy: God had reminded Man of his place.
Man was humbled, but still had Dog to comfort him.
Dog adored Man unstintingly.
And Cat couldn't care less.
