Is there a point to 'var' in classes?

Writing this:

class A
{
    var $a;

function A()
{
    $this->a = 5;
}
}

Is exactly like writing:

class A
{
    function A()
    {
        $this->a = 5;
    }
}

So why should I bother with var? Is it just for the sake of an understandable interface? (Which is equal of writing the private members in comment..?)

I think readability is one primary concern, another would be that you can initialise constants that way.

Not sure which would be faster though, but my bet is that explicitly declaring the variables wont be worse off since the interpreter has to record the variable anyway.

readability and error checking make sure you don't refer to something as errstr in one place and errorstring in another.

And you can do
var $a = 'Whatever';
Which again can make the readability a bit better.
