apart from i've forgotten my root password. Does anyone know how i can reset it? I dont remember setting one in the first place. I didn't make a backup start up disk either.
Oooooh. Not good. I know a trick if you're booting with LILO. But you'r probably booting with Grub....

Not that I know of. Not without root access. Hope you didn't have anything important on there that you can't get to as your regular user...
No. I had just installed it for the first time a few weeks ago, but couldn't get the modem to work so not used it for ages. Just had bare installation on.
So i'm going to have to reinstall it?
Yeah, I'd say so. That root pass is pretty important. Especially with default security.
