Text Handling

I have just a few questions on text handling.
I have this variable that i get from a html form with:
$_REQUEST['nom'];
but I have a problem if the user puts any space bars in the form. I'd like to know how can I either erase those spacebars or turn them into "+". Also, how can I turn the varible's content into lower case letters or viceversa.

To replace the spaces with +'s then have a look at:

To convert to lowercase:

http://uk.php.net/manual/en/function.strtolower.php

and upper:

http://uk.php.net/manual/en/function.strtoupper.php
