Filename without extension?

Hello.

I have one simple question.

What do I need to do so that php document returns a filename without extension?

Say, I'm displaying a filename from DB and I need only the name to be displayed on the page

like not "file01.jpg", but only "file01"

I just need to cut out the ".jpg"

1 simple way is to explode() the filename based on periods, array_pop() it, then implode() again.

Another would be to use regular expressions.

$filevar = eregi_replace('\.[a-z]+$','',$filevar);

i think when he asked for example code he wanted more of an explination for it too which would help the learning process more.
Now im not sure how it works but at a guess id say
$filevar (the variable)
= eregi_replace (the function)

('.[a-z]+$' (replace any character after the .***)
WITH
,'', (blank space)
on the variable $filevar);

actually it's replace any letter after the dot. but of course you can learn that here http://www.php.net/eregi_replace

does this work aswell?

$filename = "thisandthat.gif";  //the filename
$newfile = strrchr($filename,".");
//gets the last occurance of . (basically $newfile contains .gif
$newfile = str_replace($newfile,"",$filename);
//replace .gif with nothing (deletes .gif) in the filename
//$newfile = thisandthat
