I am developing scripts that are intended to be used on a wide variety of servers. One of the difficulties that I have found so far is writing to data files. Sometimes servers require permissions to be set in varying degrees of security, and others will quite happily allow files to be written with no permissions set at all. A few will not allow files to be written under any circumstances.
What I really want to know is this. Is there any convention for naming data files (.log, .dat, .txt or whatever) so that servers will recognise the file type and perhaps allow writing where they otherwise might not?
Many thanks.
