update record in text file database

I have tried to find the answer to this on the web and I could not find the answer. I am writing a php program that will work with text file database. The website does not have MySql etc. I need to update a record in text file database.

example $var|$var|$var

How would I do this. Can you give me the code?

So you are storing eash record in a line, dilineated by a |--Id also recommend a line num, so its like:
$num|$var|$var|$var

That way you know which line you are going to edit. The rest is all in the manul---check out the assorted filesystem functions for adding/editting/deleting rows from a text file.

I've tried the manual. I am really new to PHP. I need someone to give me a working example to help make since of the manual. I would be really thankful for any help.
