How to get directory name

Lets say I have a file index.php in 'xxx' directory. I need to get that directories name in index.php file. The point is I DONT KNOW that directories name, so DIRNAME(); wont work...

I dont know if I was clear enough. If you dont understand what I want I'll trie to explain another way.

I am unsure if you mean the exact directory or the directory structure that will be used within the url.

Something like

$_SERVER['PHP_SELF'];

will get the name of the file and directory structure as shown within the URL.

$_SERVER['SCRIPT_FILENAME'];

Will get the actual location on the server of the script.

and thought it might be useful to know that dirname(FILE) will return the directory of that file... FILE is a constant which returns where the file is.

So, if one named the directory including (gasp!) spaces then the return would have %20 in it... which would be valid for scripting purposes?

Or am I getting into some tricky string operations?

Just curious, because I'd love to take users' stupido directories (which ALWAYS have spaces in 'em) and use them to dictate the link name to said dir.
