FTP a mySQL database

Hey Folks,

I don't know if this is possible or even if you guys can help much. Basically I have a web site which is to be hosted on another server from my own. This web site has a mySQL database connected to it. The web site and database are currenly sitting on my server.

Now moving the website is no bother but I'm not at all sure about the database. Since I never set up the server I have no idea where the mysql databases are held. I simply use the mysql -u user -p command to get access to them.

Does anyone know fistly if it is possible to ftp a mysql database and secondly where I should start to do this (apart from finding out where the database is held).

Any help would be great.

You do not ftp a database. You need to use the command prompt for mysql, or a database utility such as mysql front, or phpmyadmin and do a database dump of the structure and data for the entire database. Then you run the resulting .sql file on the new database.

Yep, check the manual for mysqldump. This dumps your database to a file. Then you can ftp up the file and load it

Just to clarify, you don't need to ftp the file. When you create it, you can create it on your own HD, and run it on the new database from there as well.
