this is a little idea i just had. what's the Right Thing for PHP to do when it sees:

$x=-5;

should it subtract 5 from $x? or should it set $x to -5?

i have not tested this, but was jsut wondering what you guys thought would be Right.

Well, the first thing php should do is blow up becuase the statement isn't terminated with a ;

........after you fix that, it should set x to -5

Well, it's gonna assign the value "negative five" to the var $x.

And, according to the operator precedence table, that's what it ought to do.

You want the other effect, try:

$x-=5;

nope, i was thinking exactly what i said. i know that there i SOME language that uses both sets, and i remember one person's gripe with PHP had to do with that, among other things.

Hey, now, I'm not saying you're stupid. Heck, I had to read a PERL tut myself to figure out why that script wasn't working, and it didn't even help.

Turns out I'd mistyped the 'shebang' and tcsh was trying to do the work instead of PERL .....

To top that off, while playing with the firewall on my main server late last night, I used a regexp search/replace to change the statement "ipfw add" to a variable statement ... problem was, I meant to leave the "add" in, 'cause it needed it; but I didn't notice before I did

/bin/sh ./rc.firewall

and locked the entire world out of the box until 7:45 this a.m. :rolleyes:

At first look i'm saying $x=4.
after a while i think is $x=--5 to get 4.
after another while i think is $x=5-- to get 4.
after another while i think is $x--=5 to get 4.
After a long time i now know nothing of them work. 😃
