Checking For Duplicates

I am building a mailing list app in PHP and it is almost complete. There is on function I would like to build into the app. I would like to test for duplications of emails so when the email is sent out to the server it won't send duplicate emails which will potentially save the server some work. Not to mention that the the person recieving the email won't get ticked off as well.

I have all my emails pushed into an array before they are sent and I was wondering if there was a way to check these for duplicates.

So if this was the array...

$email_array = array("[e-mail]", "[e-mail]", "[e-mail]", "[e-mail]");

how could I clear out the duplicate? Any direction or suggestions on this would be appreciated.

If you don't want duplicates in a particular field in the database, you set up the tabl to automatically reject any duplicates

alter table tablename modify email varchar(35) unique;
