I would like a hit counter for my html page. Can I have one in PHP without using a database?

If not, whats a good one I can just pilf?

I've thought of something -

Can I have a number on the page formatted to look like a hit counter, but generated in PHP, by referring to itself when the page first loads, then incrementing by one, and displaying (along these lines) ?
