Client/Server chat system

Hi,

I would like to code a client/server program for my site. I'm mainly interested in a one-on-one chat that my visitors could use to communicate with each other.

I don't want anything that refreshes in order to display the latest messages.

Can PHP's networking functions handle this?

If not, what is the easiest and best programming language I must learn to achieve my goal?
