server change and mysql

I don't know anything about mysql, aside from adding articles, as we had someone set up the database for us, but he is no longer available to consult.

We recently changed servers for our website and I saved the database articles as a winzip.gz file. (I didn't know how to export properly at the time.)

Now we are live on our new server, and I don't have the first clue about how to get the right file in the right place with the right coding to function properly. I uploaded the file into an mysql folder. (The message "query failed" appears when I try to access articles in the database.)

Can someone kindly advise me or guide me in the right direction?

I am assuming if you unzip that GZ file, you will have 1 .sql file?

if so (and you have phpmyadmin) you can go to SQL tab on the top of your menu bars, and execute SQL from a file on your HD.... just point that to the file and let it do its thing)

I unzipped and chose sq, as WinZip didn't recognize the file type. I then chose sql under phpMyadmin and chose the sq file from my HD. After it dumped, this is the message I got:

MySQL said:

You have an error in your SQL syntax. Check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near '---------------------------------------------------------

Any ideas as to what the problem could be?

It looks like a mysqldump file. At the command line, do this

mysql databaseName < backup-file.sql
