looking for advice on weighting

What is the best way to use weighting. lets say i have 5 sites and want to show one site more then other in a link exchange.

But also what if i have 35 sites and want to show certain ones more then others.

Now what i was thinking was to have it randomly chose 5 url's then out of that 5 chose the highest weight.

But only one problem, what if i only have 5 url's , and i chose it to use the highest weight, well then it will always show the same url.

So any advice would be great.

multiple each weight by a random number between 0 and 2

i.e either 0 or 1 or 2

calculate this randomn multiplier for each of thr 5 urls. then see the grand.wt as
weight x multiplier.
now sort it.

or enter urls multiple times.

have five urls want one to show twice as much as the others enter it twice, want it to show three times as often enter it three times.

Fine, your both right. Advice is advice. But I wasn't looking for something like that. I want a more logical approach to things. That's like a work around, can't figure out it one way, then do the next best thing. I understand that.

Actually I think it's an elegant solution. It makes the script that generates the url very few lines of code which means it will execute in the least possible clock ticks.

I would leave the logic for the admin area. So I enter a url once in the admin area and give it a weight of 2. Then the script makes the entry twice.

In other words the logic for the multiple entries is in the admin area instead of the front end.

Multiplication is a very expensive operation and if you do it gratuitiously on your site you will end up here again in six months saying help me find my inefficiencies. If you'd like I can explain why this is the case with binary examples.
