turning off short tags with .htaccess

I have read that to turn off short tags with a .htacces file you add this line:

php_value short_open_tag Off

to .htaccess and upload it to your server. I did this and made a page and called phpinfo() and it still shows short tags as being on. Help! Thanks!

I'm pretty sure phpinfo pulls the value from the ini file. Try testing it. Make a script with short tags and see if it works..
