Keep Leading Zero

I am trying to print a number from a varchar column in a mysql table and PHP keeps trimming the leading zero. How can I stop this behavior. I have tried a number of things like typejuggling and so forth to no avail.

Can't use printf or sprintf becuase I don't know how long any given number is.

Help out.

Nope. What I actually should have said is that the problem is dumping the numbers into excel, which is where the problems occour. I have resolved the problem now so thanks anyways. (Adding a space before the number did the trick)
