Name of Simple Function

Hello,

I want to know what the function is called that is able to truncate a string down to xx characters.

This function is use for a comments system i have and it just going to display xx characters of the string and then have more link which will link through to the whole comments for the system.

searching probably would turn that up... since almost every language uses a function named simliar to that....
