PHP vs Java dilemma

howdy all,

a half-noob question for you all:

I've got a basic storefront site I've been fiddling with that makes use of sessions for a shopping-cart of sorts. I'm making use of a sub-par domain name redirection system that should in theory allow redirects within a frame (thus keeping my domain name constant in location bars while going to files hosted elsewhere) - this frame part kills the session is the problem. I can make use of a simple javascript framebusting script or two to take care of that, but then I lose session ability. I'm wondering if anyone has any clever ideas on how to keep session info functioning while keeping the parent frame in operation...

session relate an occurance of a browser window with a domain. You cannot carry session variables from domain to domain. You should simply write the site properly and use only one domain.

Actually, you could carry it over in GET variables. Such as appending the session id number to the end of the url. But in that case they'd both have to be sharing the same database.

several questions:
why are you trying to create something across multiple domains like that?

why is the subject of this thread PHP vs Java, you didn't ask anything about Java.

Java != javascript && javascript != Java

and I concur with drawmack about the cookies and sessions, you can't carry them across domains like that.

in answer to keith:
i said Java instead of javascript because I'm a dork and didn't think anything of it 😛

the reason for the domain mess is that I've got hosting on a nice big, reliable server where it also happens that I have no ability to write conf files or the like. I also have a basic redirection service available from one of the domain registrars that has hosting, but not php-capable...as a result I'm trying to mix the useful parts of both services without spending any money to make use of a single functional one - blame it on being a cheapskate

But sending data across domains via _GET is not the same thing. That splits it into 2 sessions, each residing on a different domain and you have to pass data back and forth to keep them both up to date.
A lot of overhead to account for.

we as developers need to be clear when referring to stuff like that. Otherwise, we perpetuate the misconceptions and misnomers of the common folk. I've seen job descriptions in want ads that list HTML,Perl, Java and find out later it should have read javascript. Someone who didn't know there was a difference and wasn't interviewing the right people.

you can find good domain hosting pretty cheap that will give you the capabilities you need. Sometimes it's worth a few extra bucks to make things work right.
