ug. really hope microsoft fails, on the other hand i always dreamed what it would be like to work 50 hours on an animation to have it corrupt itself upon saving.. :rolleyes:

can you imagine if every server became windows - and every program was from microsoft?? i think i would give up my job and become a professional balloon animal maker person.

Microsoft is making the world gray. thankfully, Linux keeps it colorful.

That Cntrl-S is just habit anymore. My worry is that MS will build some proprietary "You can't install the Flash plugin on Longhorn" crap. They've done it before. They continue to do it. It'll be interesting to see how this one pans out.

That would be a huge piss-off! I think that Flash MX is one of the best programs around. It's sooooooo easy to create an animation, and complex animations with animated buttons are a cinch. Flash Action Script is really cool too. And Flash also has database interaction for hardcore developers.

I'm not doubting the fact that Microsoft can create a good animation program; I'm just doubting the fact that it could compare with Flash.

Flash has come a long way, and bottom line, Macromedia brought it to this level. They're innovators in every sense of the word. But when have you known MS to not jump all over anything it sees as popular?

I read in our region's local computer magazine that Microsoft was planning on going into the Hollywood film industy, creating film editing tools for moviemakers. They met with an association for filmmakers that encompasses a few major companies. There was talk about Microsoft products becoming the new industry standard.
Guess that no movie coming from the US is going to worth watching now...

I am; the only way Microsoft could come out with anything "good" (for some value of "good") would be the same way they've ever come out with anything "good": by stealing it from another company (Pacific Coast Software for MS-DOS, Spyglass for Internet Explorer, DEC for NT4, Lattice Corporation for Microsoft C...).

Stealing isn't the exact word in some of those cases Weed. I think "muscling" would be better suited. Like the way people are "muscled" outta their casinos in Vegas. They get paid, but it's not something they wanted to sell...

It would be an okay program, probably, just not comparable to Macromedia Flash MX. Flash MX is for anybody. "Sparkle" will be for M$ obesessed losers who don't want to do anything fancy.

I don't think ms will put a you can't install flash thing in, because that would lead to giant antitrust suits and macromedia is a pretty big player, not like nutscrape.

Also, the DOJ is watching ms very closely.

On another note, no first generation tool is going to encompass everything that flash does - they'll always be behind the curve so to speak

On yet another note - I hate flash, I don't have the plugin installed and if your site uses flash you just lost one visitor.

And I use Flash for a lot of my graphics. I'm not too big on animations, maybe some small ones here and there, but mainly I just like the vector graphics + compression.

I just think, what with Longhorn not being expected until 2006 (so expect a butchered beta to be released then, with the real thing coming along three years late, as happened with Windows 95 and XP - and I note they've given up on the SQLServer-based filesystem just as they've given up on the earlier idea to have the whole filesystem based on OLE....) that gives two years for the rest of the software development world to bury Microsoft once and for all. Firebird has to put IE in the ground, Macromedia can take Flash much further; SVG can be deployed so widely that if IE7 doesn't fully (and correctly) support it that it might as well not be released at all; and Linux should knock off its crufty-looking bits. Which means it has to be slick, pretty, and coddle morons who try to use it. Yes, Linux has to be dumbed down (unless you turn on the full system) - because if there's one thing Microsoft does better than anyone else, and that's coddle morons who are easily separated from their money.

And there are a lot of morons. If it wasn't for Microsoft they wouldn't be here today.

But they are.

Speaking of which, the newest Fedora Core was released earlier this week. Got it installed on one of the old laptops, and boy oh boy, the prettiest boot I've ever seen.

wow,i never actually looked at the whole picture from that POV. i bet finding a good computer job would be at least 10 fold easier without all those degree-toting "i go by the book" people.

computers should be hard, they should not be user friendly with little paperclips that help you use a program that take a little more than smashing your fist into the keyboard and an IQ of about 12..

honestly, i know you ALL have some IT horror stories from morons who shouldnt even touch a computer, let alone get paid to use it..

Average person meaning non-technical people? The "email and web-browsing" crowd? I'm thinking that 90% of the time, when I get behind the computer, I learn something new. Through an article I read, a code snippet, a discussion, debate, manual, forum, etc. I usually learn something I didn't now before...

by average person I mean just pick up joe blow off the street 100 times and 50% of them will loose 50 IQ points when placed behind a computer.

I'll be frank. I barely know anything about computers. But I'm not stupid. I pick things up pretty quickly and I'm resourceful. All this to say that I'd be lost after installing Linux, but I'd get up on my feet pretty damn fast and I'm be a Linux-er after no time. I wouldn't say that I've never used Linux because I have, but saying that stupid people shouldn't use computers isn't very intelligent to say. Everybody needs to get connected in the wired world. It's a good thing that stupid people have to pay from M$ products; they waste money to run crap on their computers.

I swear to God I am not going to die till I've seen those sorry mongrels brought to their knees, and at the very least taken part in it.

A monopoly like this should never have had the chance to get this large. And, most importantly, a monopoly of that size should not take its place.

I'll give Gatesy 10 points for ingenuity - he exploited the the modern-day sucker brilliantly. God, I just wanna slap some people around and say "You fool."

It's a shame Linux will probably never get anywhere near MS - at least not with the modern-day sucker. Shame those people make up about 90% of the population.

Don't get me wrong, I still use MS gear. And I understand that the main reason people haven't changed is that there are no viable alternatives (Linux isn't yet viable). But if I've got an alternative I'll use it. I don't like being "borged".
