no variables from query string?

Hi. First post <blush>.

I recently compiled myqsl/apache/php on suse 8.1 and everything seems fine (i.e. web server, phpinfo(), database all work).

Php scripts are being processed mostly correctly - except -
any arguments to a script, e.g.

http://localhost/index.php?thing=fishcake

are ignored, so not only does $thing not get the value fishcake, but $thing isn't created.

hmmm, thought i. sounds like a config problem, but i've gone through php.ini and httpd.conf and cannot see anything that would help.

please can someone point me in the right direction. i'm hoping there's not some weird option to ./configure i needed, but will do whatever it takes...

Predefined Variables
Since PHP 4.1.0, the preferred method for retrieving external variables is with the superglobals mentioned below. Before this time, people relied on either register_globals or the long predefined PHP arrays ($HTTP*VARS). As of PHP 5.0.0, the long PHP predefined variable arrays may be disabled with the register_long_arrays directive.

i (naughtily) found and tweaked the register_globals since the server concerned is not externally accessible. i will update my thinking and scripts for all future projects. thanks very much for your help!

I would suggest just turning them back off and getting used to coding that way.

I to had a server when I started with them on and must say that it is a hard habit to break and makes things seem more complicated now however if I started that way it would have just been the norm
