I recently upgraded my 'false' server. I use EasyPHP to test my scripts before i put them live on my 'real' server.

Ok, so It told me that there was an avalible update so i duly thought great more stuff! and clicked update.

However, most of my scripts now run errors! I know whats wrong with them, but not how to fix it.

Ok, this is one (of many) errors i get

Notice: Use of undefined constant title - assumed 'title' in c:\program files\easyphp1-7\www\mountaincanon\php\config.php on line 35

I look in the config file and that line reads as:

$title = $config[title];

I dunno whats wrong with that. Although it ried putting quotes in and the error dissapeared (i.e $config['title']😉. However I have many pages and all of ym scripts have been written without the quotes! What do i change and where? I know its possible as the previous version allowed this!

i'm not a PHP administrator so as much newbie friendly help would be appreciated! thank you!

I know that! sorry i thought i had explained this part.

I have LOADS of files with the 1st format. and it'd be a huuuuge job to go through them all. Isnt there a setting I can change in php.ini or soemthing?

Well you could just write a little script to do it for you. ie. transfer the occurances of [title] into ['title'].

You could use specific functions to do this:

or if you have unix then I usually use this little bash script:

for occur in *.php; do
mv $occur $occur.old
sed 's/FINDSTRING/REPLACESTRING/g' $occur.old > $occur
rm -f $occur.old
done

if you are using dreamweaver then stop right now with the php.ini.

open dreamweaver open 1 of the files press ctrl f
type in $config[title]; in the upper box
type in $config['title']; in the lower box

ensure that all documents in site is selected and hit replace all.

dreamweaver will change all instances sitewide.

You should always use quotes around an associative array index. For example, use $foo['bar'] and not $foo[bar]. But why is $foo[bar] wrong? You might have seen the following syntax in old scripts:

$foo[bar] = 'enemy';
echo $foo[bar];
// etc

This is wrong, but it works. Then, why is it wrong? The reason is that this code has an undefined constant (bar) rather than a string ('bar' - notice the quotes), and PHP may in future define constants which, unfortunately for your code, have the same name. It works, because the undefined constant gets converted to a string of the same name.

thanks all, but im just going through it with textpad changing every occurance. If I replace all there are some instances where it cannot have quotes (in a mysql or echo statement say) and it has to be like {$row['title']}. I have quite a few of those so its just gonna take a while!

if you're not to concerned about the problem (but you should be!) then just change the error_reporting directive in php.ini. but it is a good idea to use quotes always anyway......
