Very n00b question/s- simple answer i'm sure

Hey all-

First off I just wanna say hi and that I hope to spend more time here when I need help in the future.

Anway. Here's the quick story: A month ago I opened a geocities.com pro website (9.00 a month). Besides the fact that I got ripped off, I am only using about 2% of my bandwidth :rolleyes: I decided that I can just run a server out of my house (i have a high speed cable modem, avg 65 kbs upload speed).

So I've been working for quite some time on this one problem that is so simple, but i just can't resovle it. Here's the setup first: windows xp home + abyss web server + php4. OK so the problem is that when I try to run most php scripts, they won't work. The reason is that the variable/data folder is read-only (i think). I know that if I was using a *nix server that I could just chmod it to 777. the current "chmod" is 677 or 667.

Well I THINK this is the problem. I'm not on the server so I can't show the errors that I get... so I'm just going to assume this is the main reason why things don't work.

So can somebody PLEASE tell me how I can go about making the folders NOT read-only?

I know that php is running correctly b/c i got a simple counter to work. abyss web server functions just fine with it. Please tell me if you need anymore information to help with my problem. Thanks in advance!

i'm using win2kpro with apache, and i think win2kpro will work the same way as xp on this matter (as they are both NT beneath)

go to your web root on your computer, right click the folder, click properties, then security

in 2k you have a user account for web visitors called IUSR_COMPUTERNAME, ie on mine it is IUSR_AHOPKINSON - the common name is Internet Guest Account i think

you need to add this user to the security for the folder, and give him full control in the allow column (to match 777) or different access for equivalent chmods

restart the server (think this is necessary) and try again

big question here - do you have a static IP address?

you don't necessarily need a static ip - you can use services such as dyndns.org to run your own server on a dynamic ip

in fact, i've just bought a netgear rp614 router & switch, and in the router web server it has a section especially for dyndns - cool!

yes I do have a static IP but that shouldn't have anything to do with the problem. I'll try what the first response said.
