Php based website

I want to build a php based website with the ability to add news, upload images (with thumbnails), a guest book, personal pages (where every user can updates things like their favorite food, music, location and stuff like that).

What would the simplest way to start out to build something like this, please keep in min that I'm a php newbie.

Building a CMS as your first project is not going to be easy. It could very easily take you many months to do something like this. You may be better of getting one of the already popular CMS packages and using that, or at least studying the code.

You could do worse than use PostNuke which is quite easy to use, generally secure, and has lots of modules you can add on with no knowledge of PHP needed.

There are others - Envolution, PHPNuke, and more besides. Many of them are pretty similar having once been the same system that has been developed for more or less of a particular attribute that suited one group of people developing it more than another group.
