(more n00b questions) need very basic help setting up mySQL

Hey all-

OK my first post was my stupid problem with php (folder permissions). I havn't exactly figured out what was wrong, but i did get a package that includes apache, php, and mysql. that took care of the main problem.

anyways i would like to create my first database with mysql. first off, you must understand that i know nothing about any sql stuff so i'm kind of stabbing in the dark.

So I went to a website that looked promising, but just can't help me with my problem. I can't get into the mysql program to create a database. it freezes up on me when i try. here's what i do and what happens:

I navigate to the mysql/bin/ folder in dos (i'm using windows xp) and type in "mysqld --standalone". at that point, after i press enter, it returns to the next line an doesn't show anything. I guess i'm supposed to get a mysql prompt.

What am I doing wrong here? is there a different way to create a database that I can have my phpBB connect to? I'm a very confused person 😕 . please help! thanks

Check in your mysql/bin directory for a program called WinMySQLAdmin.exe

If it's there, that should get you going. If not, come back here for another try.

OK I got the mySQL version with WinMySQLAdmin. I set the correct folders in the config file for mySQL for my bundle with mysql/php/apache. now that I've started the server and it says that mySQL is functioning properly, I opened winmysqladmin and i don't think that it recognizes the server.

I can see under the help section for the database tab that when it's running correctly, you can set up a new database. Something isn't working right with mine, because I don't have anything showing under databases. How should I go about getting winmysqladmin to the point where i can add databases?

another edit: change that. I sort of have it fixed. here's what's happening: I can see the current databases (there are two, mysql and test) but I can't add a database... I don't know what to do now. When I right click anything in the database tab, it only gives me all of the flush options. help again!
