Best way to authentifiate user ...

Hi!

After a long search for session and cookie, i'm confused and need a starting point.

I've got a login page, need the username and pass of the member. When he submit, a script check if the information is valid or not with an mysql query and set him as Online in the db.

What i want and try to do is, when a member is correctly login, to create (session or cookie) to authentifiate his on each of my page. I also want to make a expiration script so when user has do nothing since 30minute (for example), then his status goes to Offline and when he click on a link later, he has to re-login.

Can someone help me just to figure out how to start.

If you wanted to do this with cookies, after successful login, you would set a cookie to expire after 30 mins. If the user visits another page, a new cookie is set and the old one is deleted.

I don't know how to use sessions, but I hope this puts you on the right track.
