Even better, there are discussions on this site in the EL --- seems like the biggie was "Which forum script do you use and why?" Use the Search button and see what you can see.
Some of them are free. I use PhpBB myself.
Also, places like HotScripts.com have a lot of functional scripts, which you can either use, or strip down/pick apart/dis-assemble - whatever you need to do to figure out how they work...
