There've lots of threads on this, such as the ranting threads, as well as the shotgunning and bumping threads, but I've decided to make one thread that encompasses them all, and if I miss any, just tell me to add to the list
Bumping: replying to a thread for the sole purpose of making the thread appear at the top of the list, without adding any value to it; it's okay to bump old topics, especially in the Echo Lounge, if you have something valuable to add to the discussion, or want to revive an old interesting discussion topic, go ahead. But there is absolutely no point in bumping a resolved thread, or bumping an answered question.
Crossposting: posting a thread or question in more than one forum
Shotgunning: posting a thread or question in almost every forum, even if it's off-topic from the forum
Hi-jacking: asking your own questions in someone else's thread
Jumping on the bandwagon: posting requests for help in someone else's thread
Thread-fing: I apologize for not being able to come up with a better name for this one...perhaps Constant posting? Anyway, what this means is that one replies to a thread as soon as somebody else replies and adds no value to the thread, just posts words such as: 'yes', 'no', 'lol', etc. Sometimes this is fine, but doing it constantly, especially in a help forum, is unacceptable and is considered bumping. If you need clarification, type: "Could you please clarify?" instead of "okay then:rolleyes:".
Bad forum: Posting your thread in the wrong forum is a bad idea. Don't post your string-handling function questions in the Install forum, and don't post your Linux Red Hat questions in the NuspherePHPEd forum. Forums are divided for a reason. If you don't know where the question goes, place it in the General Help section. And don't use for excuse for this transgression that a certain forum is dead. None of the forums are dead. People just haven't had questions pertaining to them in a while.
Being rude: speaks for itself
Requesting existing articles: While I'm pretty sure this hasn't come up yet, DON'T DO IT!
Advertisng: No form of advertisement is allowed on the board, this includes job postings. Some people on this board are still in school and don't care for this crap that doesn't enrich the board.
Not phrasing a question properly: Don't ask 'yes' or 'no' questions if you want to know how to do something. While most people, like me, are lenient, and know what you mean, some people like to have fun and reply with a yes/no. Well you can't blame 'em.
Politics and blackmail: It shouldn't happen. Don't try to get 'revenge' on people. Don't use 'forum politics'. That really downgrades the board.
Double-posting: Pressing the submit reply button forty times does not help. Sometimes the server's just slow. Live with it.
Closed-source: We can't help you unless you show your code. If your code has sensitive information, replace that with asterisks (). Sometimes people might to tell you to SUSC (show us your code) or SYFC (show your frickin code).
The above post should read...: The edit button is there for a reason. Use it.
Non vB code PHP: One day, a vBulletin dude decided that PHP syntax highlighting was cool. So, he integrated it into vBulletin for all to enjoy. Enclose all PHP code you post inbetween
tags. (The closing tag has a slash.) If your code is very long, post it as an attachment.
[*]Code snippets: A piece of code, no matter how irrelevant, can be the source of a problem. Post your whole code. If you have a very long code, post it as an attachment or a link. If you want, you can post a snippet where you think the problem is, as well as the code.
[*]Dissing the PEBoD: If you do PEBoD wil kill you. **
**jokin'...please feel free to diss the PEBoD
N.B: Please note that most of the above do not apply to the Echo Lounge :D ***
***just kiddin'...most of them do...in fact...all of them do (but you can get away with a lot more in the Echo Lounge:D)
