Upload EXCEL sheet to MySQL

Good day every one.

Another question by ME. Some times I wish i had more answers then questions..but that doesn't seem to be the case these days.

Either way, here is my perdicement.

I have an excel spread sheet. I need to upload it, decipher it and put the data in the columns into a database.

Any thoughts on how to proceed?

I'm having issues uploading to a database period.

BUt any help on where to look and start on this...i'd really appretiate it.

couple of ways here

convert the file to CSV (save as CSV file) and use phpmyadmin to load it or use the mysql load to load it direct
still save as CSV and use php to open the file into an array with [man]fgetcsv/man and then explode the comma delimited array and place each value into the db

You can also connect to the excel file with ODBC and then transfer straight across to mysql - but unless the excel files are in a really uniform format they're a complete horror as far as ODBC is concerned and I absolutely recommend Bastien's answer.

I have to switch the form to .csv eh?

IS there a way I can automate this? The user has .xls and telling them another step may be a bad move.

try using the [man]rename[/man]

or for a more complex approach, you would need to use [man]COM[/man] (assuming you are using a win32 system, due to Excel) and open the file, then use save as to do the change

you would have to play with it.

This a php class that can read xls files and works without COM.
