Converting *.html site to *.php & Search Engines: Please Help.

I would like to convert a HTML-based website to a PHP-based website.

However, if I change all of my .html pages to .php, then the search engines will have broken links.

Do you have any tips on making sure it will not affect the links to my site in the search engines?

I thought about putting meta refresh statements in all of the .html pages that refresh to the new .php pages, but this could be a lot of work -- for thousands of pages.
