e-commerce small business solutions

I'm building a website for a business that deals in both the b2b and b2c industries. the site needs to be able to take online payments. i have been using php for almost a year and have made a number of php/mySQL websites including one that made use of sessions and shopping basket functionality. this is not a problem, what i am new to however is the process of taking and validating online payments. I have seen certain solutions such as osCommerce but as i can tell this leaves very little capacity for the site to retain an individual identity. What i would like to know then is what solutions people use for such a scenario. I want to be able to take payments from the major credit card comapanies but as this is a small business it would be preferable that there is no major monthly charge although a basic fee is obviously expected.

would really appreciate any ideas/thoughts that people might have.

There are plenty of companies that will do online credit-card validation, including some banks and telecommunication companies, whose work is entirely behind the scenes, leaving you free to make the site look the way you want. I'm not in a position to give any recommendations to any in particular (partly because it depends on which are convenient for you), but PHP is already bundled with extensions for using some of them.
