i want to check the name of the picture that i want to upload before i upload it to the server, how can i only get the name of the picutre without the source of where the picture is located ?

I'm not very sure what you are talking about, but have you tried looking into the $_FILES array, or things like [man]pathinfo/man ?

Actually, it depends on how you define "upload to the server".
$_FILES is temporary, so in a way the uploading process would not have been finished.

Can Laserlight help me with this?? I need to buy a boxed copy of PHPed for Linux in Singapore...any ideas? I know I can order it on-line, but would rather make sure I get the right box (after some bad experiences with mail deliveries.....).
