check validity focus on text box/text area

Dear All

I am generating a form and wish to check validity of the field (should not be vlank etc)

How do I check following
1. A text box/area is blank
2. A text box wich should be numerical contain non-numerical data / characters

In case of invalid data (character in place of numeric) I want to focus the cursor on erroneous object (in this case test box/area)

Please help !!!

As u know what you name each thing in a form, will be the variable name on the next page. say if I named an input box username, then on the next page if I went echo "$username"; it will echo what they typed in. to check if it is blank I go on the next page

if (!$username) {
echo "Please fill in the username form";
}
