Inserting breaks in text

I want to be able to get the text that is inserted by visitors to my website from a form and then make it appear on page. I am having trouble getting it to appear with line breaks.

Can anyone direct me to some code or a script which show me how to replace the newline or return characters with the <br /> and make it appear formatted correctly on my webpage.

Alternatively if someone could direct me to a script which produces something like the page to post thread on this site with similar text editor that would be great.
