auto break to next td..?

um, i really dont know how to describe my problem so the post title might be really off or something haha ;x

but anyways, i have some text, fairly large amount, that i wanna wanna put into a table like this.

<table><tr>
<td>first set....</td><td>second set...</td>
</tr></table>

and so on you get the idea. but i wanna cut my text so that the first 100 words or 100 characters, it doesnt matter, goes into the first td, second 100 into second td and so on. and the table has a defined height so its pretty much horizontal. i have no clue where to start. and if my crap explanation of my question confuses you, ill be happy to go into detail of what im trying to achieve :p

[man]wordwrap[/man] or [man]chunk_split[/man] spring to mind; you can pass something like "</td><td>" as the third argument to put table cell breaks.

Those both work at the character level. [man]split[/man] or [man]preg_split[/man] followed by [man]array_chunk[/man] and then [man]join[/man] can do for you at the word level.
