[Ignorant noob] Help with installing mod's on Linux

Ok yes I'm a noob, and a self taught one at that. If this is documented somewhere, please post a link or something. I know this is probably going to be a stupid question!

Our server is a Linux box (believe Redhat) running PHP 4.1.2. I need the 'Unified ODBC' functions installed. My experience with Linux is nill, so I need a few pointers on how to enable (if possible) this module or need to know if it just need's to be rebuilt (ahhhhh!)

\ On my M$ //localhost/ I'm running PHP 4.3.3 which had the 'Unified ODBC' functions integrated into it. I never thought to check the production server before writing MB's of script for mod's not available.

Hi,

which linux distribution do you have (version).
If you write a little phpinfo script and execute it on the linux server you can see which configure options have been used to compile php for that distribution.

1) You might then try to recompile php with the basic switches (directories, apxs etc.) like shown on the phpinfo page and just odbc support. Do not run make install and just copy the shared module to the directory where the other modules already exist and try if you can enable it by adding extension=module_lib.so to php.ini.

2) If that doesn't work you might need to recompile and install php completely from scratch using alls switches like shown on phpinfo and additionally the odbc switch.

I'm not sure if solution 1 works 🙁

I found out yesterday that our host is using Red Hat StrongHold 4, which apparently is a derivative of Apache. But they informed me that they cannot install the ODBC mod, that the entire server would have to be reinstalled using different software. Not sure if they just don't want to do it or what, but I'm out of luck... I'm probably going to have to write something in PERL to get this working.
