if it[your db of choice] supports [man]ODBC[/man] use that

Im not very familiar with hssql.....However....If it has an ODBC driver...That would most definately work...If not...You will have to use JDBC drivers and the java integration with PHP....(Which is pretty beta)....

I would try ODBC first and see if you can locate a driver for that particular DB...
