Damn ****ing backreferences

None of my backreferences work with preg_replace and it s really pissing me off...

Heres what I have:

$pc = preg_replace("/a href=(\"|')([a-zA-Z0-9?&=.]+(\"|'))/i","a href=\"index.php?action=$1\"",$pc);

I think you mean $2; $1 refers to the opening quotation mark.

Alternatively, stick with $1 and replace (\"|') with [\"'].

Either way, you'll want to take the closing quotation subpattern out of the () it's in now, or it will become part of the value of $2.

Or, you could specify that the parentheses are non-capturing parenthesis, buy using the ?: notation, like this:

/a href=(?:\"|')([a-zA-Z0-9?&=.]+)(?:\"|')/i

Though Weedpacket's idea would possibly be better, as it will be eaiser to read:

/a href=\"'[\"'])/i

You also forgot some valid characters for a URI, if that is important...
