[Resolved] Point of despair with WinXp PHP4 install

Hi all,

I have just spent two whole days (and much of the nights) fighting with PHP4/Apache2 and still cannot get PHP to work. I really need to get this working and it is frustrating the hell out of me.
I have read about every config tweak and file version/location on the net and have not got close to seeing any PHP once. No errors, just no PHP.
Anyway, here is what I normally do.
Install Apache 2.0.48. Check that localhost points to the Apache intro page.
Install PHP4 from php-4.3.4-Win32.zip.
Copy php.ini-recommended (or php.ini-dist, neither worked) to php.ini in C:\Windows.
Copy php4apache2.dll and php4ts.dll to C:\Windows\System32 (and System for good measure). In fact I ended up copying every dll that comes with PHP to System32 to be sure they were being located.
Edit httpd.conf to contain relevant entries for CGI and failing that relevant entries for module. I have even spent an hour or two IM with Kobmat who has checked everything and has no more ideas.
I am using WinXp Home Edition on a virtually brand new Dell Dimension 4600. Does anyone know of any reason why I cannot get PHP working after about 30 server/PHP installs??

What isn't working? Is it asking you to download the php page or is it just displaying the php code in the browser?

I just don't see anything between <?php ?> in the browser. I just get the HTML that is around it. I can see it in the source.

I even tried doing the installation on my girlfriends Win98SE last night and couldn't get it working there either which makes me think I am probably just doing something wrong, but I can't work out what.

All,

I have spoken to one of my web-developer colleagues and he thinks I am doing something fundamentally wrong (due to not having any web dev experience).
I have not been 'pointing' my browser to the files, I have been double-clicking the file or opening it in the browser. Would someone please just confirm that I am being a complete muppet and that typing http://localhost/test.php should work while my other methods were just plain wrong (I am at work and can't check til later). Thanks.
