Does this make sense - phpinfo ok, but nothing else?

I have gone through every possible method of installation, starting with manual apache 1.3x install and php 4.3.4 install. I have since give up on my own skills and tried phpdev and devside.net. Some kind of glitch locally won't allow any of these installs to function.

I can get the Apache frontpage, I can type in phpinfo(); and it shows all the info. I tried comparing it to my hosting account but these are different OS's so why bother.

So, the fun part. When I type in echo $HTTP_USER_AGENT or if I was to simply pass a couple items in a form for output on the next page, it all fails.

I then upload my pages to my hosting account to check my sanity and... it all works.

Please give an example of what doesn't work on your end and does on your hosting end? Also, what are the error messages or specific behaviors that you are experiencing when it fails? What OS is your side and what OS is hosting-side?

Hi,

register_globals might be set to Off on your installation.
Try to set register_globals=On or use

$_SERVER["HTTP_USER_AGENT"] instead of $HTTP_USER_AGENT.

What are the security drawbacks for register globals?

It looks like my host has register globals on as well... so could it be all that bad. I just got the idea that it was a temporary setting from reading the description in php.ini.
