PHP/HTML tables from MySQL query

This drives me nuts...

I want a 1 column, 3 row table to repeat 4 times horizontally, while retrieving new data each time, then go to the next line and repeat till all data is retrieved.

So:

top row1
middle row 2
bottom row 3

Repeat 4x horizontal, line break, repeat, till all data is retrieved.

Can someone help me from going insane?

If you don't mind using nested tables (can get a little chunky on the browser) you can do it this way

$rowcount=0;
while($row=mysql_fetch_array($res)) {
  if(++$rowcount%4==0) {
    ?></tr><tr><?php
  }
?>
<td>
<table>
<tr><td><?=$row['row1']?></td></tr>
<tr><td><?=$row['row2']?></td></tr>
<tr><td><?=$row['row3']?></td></tr>
</table>
</td>
<?php
}
for($rowcount;$rowcount%4!=0;$rowcount++) {
  ?><td></td><?php
}
?></tr></table>
