Tape Backup and MYSQL

I am currently running mysql on an SGI system. I use xfsdump to dump the filesystems to tape. My question is if my mysql database is getting backed up to tape as any other file is.

Maybe this is a stupid question. Becasue i guess that the database is just a regular file.

I have ran mysql dump before. But i would rather backup my database like i backup the rest of my system.

Maybe not!

When you dump the database, you get a ascii file that contains all the commands necessary to recreate it, usually with the extension .sql.

If you back this file up on tape, you will have backed up your db, since all you have to do is run the .sql file.
