Is there a way that you can point a script at a webpage and ask it to search for a file?

I can do it if the script is sat on the server and searches through the normal /home/public_html/....etc way, but need to do it from a webpage to look at other sites.

I host a few sites for people and don't want anything dodgy on there, or formmail after the security problems and spammers so I want to give the script a webpage URL to start from and see if it can find the dodgy program name from there downwards.

yeah just specify what you're looking for and where then use fsock open. You could also use fread to follow the link chain all over the site.

so if i am on server 'A', the others are on server 'B', I could fsockopen to their http://domainname.com and search for the name of the file?

you would fsockopen to that domain and then request the file you've been looking for and see if you get an error.
