Problems dealing with quotation and apostrophe pucntuation

I have been plagued by text strings like;

"fred's Floppy"

The users insert quotes before and after the string, while also using an apostrophe.

I have tried the addslashes and stripslashes, but they fail is there is one more quote or apostrophe than I have add or strip slashes.

Ideas?

Strip them out if they're un-neccesary. You probably also have magic_quotes GPC to deal with here, so check that slashes aren't automatically being added or you.

Dealt with the magic_quotes_gpc already. Set to Off. Problem is the users, they use the punctuation in a valid manner, I may have to execute a string replace on the fields with some other innocuous character.

Don't like the idea of rewiriting all that code.
