Limiting amount of words from DB

Hello
I'm trying to limit the amount of words displayed from a database. I want to display 200 words then to have the 1|2|3|4 next page links at the bottom of the page which displays another 200 words and so on.

I have managed to get hold of some code which displays a set amount of records and the the 1|2|3|4 Next Page links.

Can anyone help?

Hi Weimie

I had this problem the other day, too. It depends on how your DB table is constructed, but if you're talking about a solid body of text in one field, then you can do this:

$display1 =substr($text, 0, 200);
$display2 = substr($text, 201, 400);

I suspect that's not exactly what you want, but you'll need to give some details about your table if that doesn't answer your question.

That would limit characters, not words 🙂

Words are a bit more tricky - you could split the entire string into an array ( $array = split(" ", $string) ) but that would run into problems with newlines. Possibly preg_split("\b", $string) might be more effective but likely very very slow. In either case you could then show the first 200 branches of the array, or 201-400 etc etc. Not a very elegant solution.

I think a better way would be to create 'pages' in the database, so when the record is inserted do the slow processing there, and the retrieval would be alot faster.

I really want to keep at this to try and get it how I want. My table is just id, text.

You may want to look at str_word_count.

Or you could use preg_split to split up your words. It's a little more accurate.

Something like this would do the trick:


$wordcount = preg_split("#\\W+#", $string, -1, PREG_SPLIT_NO_EMPTY);

Try using that in conjunction with array splice.

str_word_count() heh, never used that one before 🙂.

Speed does not seem to be much of an issue either - preg_splitting a 6,000 word string takes no time at all on my system. Still not the most efficient though 😉
