I've got a severe case of The Right Click Blues

I have a site that has MP3s on it. I want people to be able to click on a link to the MP3s and then be presented with a pop up that says 'Do you want to Open or Save?' (or some words to that effect).

It's all very normal stuff that I'm sure we've all seen this kind of thing before.

The only trouble is, in order to make that happen, I need to do a RIGHT click with my mouse and then select "Save Target as...". If I do a left click on a file, it simply takes me to an error page. That is uncool.

So, is there a way that you can have it so that a LEFT click will do the trick?

Off-hand, I wonder if sending the file under a Content-Type header of "application/octet-stream" will work: the browser won't have any default handling for that and ought to suggest that it's saved.

But IE defaults to the windows registered extensions first. So IE won't care about the octet-stream header it'll just open the file. The header to use for IE is the orientation: attachment header.

i think what they mean to say is no 🙂, unless you get it streamed on the left click due to evil explorer defaults?

I stream. Problem is, mozilla and firebird add a very annoying .php at the end of the file name (du'h) that you have to delete manually so I try to avoid as often as possible.

I agree 'tis a bug (even though the behaviour is RFC-compliant and was originally intended as a security feature). It's suggested in one of those that Microsoft's endearing habit of pandering to its target market and leaving off file extensions has contributed (.vbs.txt, anyone?)

Have you tried slimp3? I use the perl scripts to stream from my server (usually to my laptop in the next room) but its nice to be able to listen to my mp3s at work if I want. (and the software is open source)
