Search Engine Friendly Links Broken, Need Help Please!

I'd like to begin by saying what an awesome community you have! I've never seen so many helpful people in one place, great job, keep it up. I have a major problem on my hands. I was using search engine friendly links to convert a link like:

http://www.performancepartz.com/product_info.php?products_id=323

Into:

http://www.performancepartz.com/product_info.php/products_id/323

My sever underwent some changes and now .htaccess file was swiped clean, and I believe there were several .php functions to interpret the urls, these also do not work! Since my site is heavily indexed in Google, can anyone suggest how I can use Mod_Rewrite to fix this? Better yet can someone draft a mod_rewrite rule that does this?

I believe mod_rewrite is not enough on its own, doesnt this require some .php coding also? Furthermore, I know this is not a mod_rewrite discussion board, however, I am in a huge bind, and I would really appreciate you guys sharing your extensive knowledge. I have been working on a fix for this problem for 2 weeks and have been unable to do it!

ForceType is a possible answeron... search the board...

here is the .htaccess that I use for this

<Files articles>
  ForceType application/x-httpd-php
</Files>

This says that when a url like http://www.mydomain.com/articles that should be interpreted with the file named articles (no .php extension) which should be rendered as a php application.

I extract subsequent directories (i.e. /1/1) like this

    $url_array = explode("/",$_SERVER['REQUEST_URI']);
    if(isset($url_array[2])) {$section = $url_array[2];}
    else {$section = '';}
    if(isset($url_array[3])) {$Article = $url_array[3];}
?>

$url_array[0] = www.mydomain.com
$url_array[1] = articles
$url_array[2] = # or nothing
$url_array[3] = # or nothing
