Hi I am a bit stuck here,

I have to create an HTML table and put its "ID"s inside the cells

eg.

A1, B1, C1 ...
A2, B2, C2 ...
A3, B3, C3 ...
A4, B4, C4 ...

and so on.

right now i am creating the table with a for loop

for ($i = 0; i < $rows; i++) {
echo"<tr>";

for (j = 0; j < cols; j++) {
echo "<td>cell</td>";
}

echo"</tr>";

}

Anyone with any ideas how to create the IDs

Something like this ought to do it:

$rows = 4;
$cols = 3;
$letters = array("A", "B", "C", "D", "E"); // and so on...
echo "<table>\n";
for ($i=0; $i<$rows; $i++) {
	echo "	<tr>\n";
	for ($j=0; $j<$cols; $j++) {
		echo "		<td>".$letters[$j].($i+1)."</td>\n";
	}
	echo "	</tr>\n";
}
echo "</table>\n";
?>

ok thanks alot, I made a similar solution when your post just came in.

and now for the real headdache

If I set up my letter array to english alphabet (A-Z,length would be 26)

but if I have and cols = 36, cols after 26 would be undefined.

Excel would for example start at 27 with AA AB AC AD AE,
and then again when reachin 26*2 BA, BB, BC , BD, BE

How can I solve this, any pointers?

This might be something you can use, it can build up to a 26x26 grid of the format
aa, ab, ac, ad etc
ba, bb, bc, bd etc
ca, cb, cc, cd etc

Over 26x26 it starts from AA again, so would need some extra work to go over 26 rows/columns. I didn't write the chr()/ord() bit btw, it maps against ascii values as far as I can see from the manual 🙂
