Just wondering on what everyone’s thoughts are as to the best way to get your website listed on search engines...

Is it worth it to pay?

Make your site using valid, semantic (X)HTML, with CSS for layout/presentation, and they (Google) will find you... 😉

F**K MSN! Who cares about a crappy search engine that nobody uses? The majority of people use Google. I'm one of the few people who doesn't always use Google. Half the people I know have Google as their homepage! And some search engines, such as Kart00, index sites very, very, very often. They even found my obscure, crappy, non-XHTML-compliant site!

lol. I basically agree with Merve. If Google finds my sites, I'm a happy guy.

Google powers Yahoo!, which acquired Overture in October. Overture is affiliated with MSN and Infospace, and AlltheWeb is a business of Overture.

Just swap links with similar sites to yours and Google will find you 😉

There are three things a site needs to be well-indexed. Content, content, and content. Get enough interesting text in there and its lexical gravitational field will just suck those spiders in.

haha, looks like i got a few people goin, I guess it was a dumb question.. But I guess I won't be payin for listings.

Anyone still a fan of altavista? What happend to them, used to be the best!

it makes me laff when people ring us up asking if we'd like to spend £500+ on search engine listings and so on, my question back to them is how did you find us?

when they answer through a search engine i find it justification enough to be rude to the poor schlep who rang, i usually thank them for trying to take the p*** and wish them better luck in finding a sucker.

in answer to your question. no. i'd never pay for search listings or seo services.

good content, well formed markup, inward bound links and http://www.google.co.uk/addurl.html is all you need. imho

Four things, content, content, content, and incoming links :p Seriously, how else would the spider find you? Random guessing of addresses? 😃

I see a lot of spiders coming in from search engines that aren't sending me heaps of traffic. I think that being in the WHOIS database has more value than the cost of the rental of the domain.

I wouldn't pay for a listing.

About 5 years ago (when I was just starting to look at HTML), I found a site called Add Me (free search engine submission site). It's still up and running, but not sure how well it works nowadays. Might be worth giving it a try.

Personally, I've found that since most people use Google, its best to submit your site there, although I've found that they will find you very quickly (I used to get about 3-4 crawlers from google per day just before I started to redevelop my site)

Search engines frown on automated submission services and scripts so I would stay away from them 😉

Google does notice, it can tell if your trying to hide them by making them the same colour as the BG and other things to, and considers it spam.

Red uniforms? 😕
